Starting from the 1980s, due to collecting, buy-offs or received gifts and the implementation of systematic archaeological investigations in different Croatian sites, the Museum’s holdings have been enriched by numerous objects and presently have approximately 400,000 various artefacts.
The material of the Museum has been classified in five collections: Prehistoric, Greek and Roman, Medieval, Numismatic and Egyptian Collections.
The Museum also owns a Collection of Etruscan monuments, the most significant of which is the so called Zagreb "Linen book", as well as several specific groups of monuments and collections that belong to various other cultures.
