Iron pan
Iron pan
The Romans prepared their food on the hearth. They have, after the fire was kindled, placed the vessels onto tripods or grates; sometimes tri-legged vessels and pans on legs were also used.
An example of this type of pan was found in Ščitarjevo (Roman Andautonia). It was made of struck iron, with three legs and a long handle. An experiment conducted with a copy of this pan has shown that during food preparation the handle’s end is not very heated, and one can grasp it with ease, which is probably the main reason for its length.
