Emperor's torso
Emperor's torso
A fragmentary torso of the emperor in larger-than-life size was discovered on the island of Vis and it was previously stored in the collection of Vinko Soliter in Split. As the head of the monument is missing it is impossible to determine with assurance which emperor it represents though there is no doubt, owing to the image, that the monument represents an imperial figure. The sculpture is dressed in a short folded tunic above which he wears richly decorated breastplate armour from which two rows of pterygia or folds come hanging down.
