Stele of Marcus Herenius Valens

The large stele found in Vinkovci in 1891 is the tombstone of the 75-year old Marcus Herenius Valens, native of Salona in Dalmatia. It was his freedman and heir, Marcus Herenius Helis, who had the monument raised. The inscription offers a detailed insight into the life and military career of many years of Marcus Herenius Valens who, as an officer, more precisely centurion, served in several legions and carried out various duties in different parts of the Roman Empire.
