Red-figure vases - Southern Italy
Red-figure vases
Southern Italy
The greatest part of the Collection of Greek vases of the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb consists of Red-figure style vases that by their quality and way of decoration can be attributed to the Southern Italian workshops.
Namely, in mid-5th century B.C. some ceramists, i.e. potters from Athens moved to the area of Great Greece, the present-day Southern Italy, where soon the production in the local workshops became independent. The production of such vases lasted up to the end of the 4th century and the well-known workshops were situated in Apulia, Campania, Lucania and on Sicily.
