Red-figure vases
Red-figure vases
Attic krater
Around the year 530 B.C. the manner of painting vases significantly changed; the new technique was namely discovered of the manner of firing that made it possible to paint the vessels in a completely different way from the one was also applied in the case of Black-figure style. After the figure was sketched, varnish was coated onto the surface round the figure that then consequently remained red, i.e. in the colour of clay.
Then details were executed with congested varnish coated on with a special feather or small brush. This technique made the drawing of details possible, and consequently a more realistic representation of the anatomy of the body, clothes and even the state of emotions.
