Manner of manufacturing Greek vases
Vases were manufactured in specialised workshops and they were the work of potters and painters some of whom signed their piece of work.
The vessels were manufactured on the potter's wheel from well-purified clay. After drying the vessel was painted and then fired in furnaces. According to the old Greek tradition that originates from the Neolithic, the technique of painting with diluted, peptized clay (clay varnish) that as liquid mass would be used to coat the earthenware; after being fired in the furnace it would give the vessel the characteristic lustre and colour.
