Egyptian Collection
The Egyptian collection of the Archaeological Museum in Zagreb is the most significant and the only systematic collection of this type in Croatia. In terms of the number of items and their variety, the Zagreb collection is definitely among the more interesting ones in Central Europe. The gathering of Old-Egyptian items in Croatia started with the project of the founding of the National Museum at the time of the Croatian Revival in the 19th century.
The first buy off supplied this newly founded institution around two thirds of the total holdings that makes the present collection of some 2,200 items. After the first great acquisition, the Collection was additionally supplied with buy offs and gifts among whom the most significant was the gift of the sarcophagus and mummy Kaipamau received from the government of the Arab Republic of Egypt in the year 1970.
