Celts (Greek Keltoi, Latin Celtae or Galli), the people who colonized a great part of Europe in their conquering incursions, together with many crafts skills also fully mastered the technology of processing iron. Iron was used for the manufacturing of various objects of everyday use abut also weapons – swords, combat knives, spears as well as reinforcements like umbos [shield bosses],
flanges or rims and grips on wooden, leather-covered shields. Due to their weapons that had the hardness and elasticity of steel, but also due to the cruelty of the Celtic warriors, for a long time great fear pervaded the population regarding the Galls, i.e. Celts, the fear usually referred to as Horror gallicus.
