Vessel in the shape of a bird
Vessel in the shape of a bird;
Vučedol Culture
The vessel in the shape of a bird (The Vučedol Dove) is a cult finding of the Vučedol Culture. It was found in Vučedol near Vukovar, the eponymous site of this culture. It is a ceramic hollow vessel of a voluminous body raised upright on three small, straight, plug-like legs, and the backside, tail and breast are richly decorated with a scored ornament filled with white incrustation that is partly preserved.
It is assumed that in the course of some religious feasts, while performing some rituals, the vessel might have been used to keep some hallucinogenic liquid. However, what had not yet been harmonized are the ideas about the sort of bird it is. There are some that claim it is a dove, others are of the opinion that it is a partridge, but both of them are represented in the symbolism and beliefs of the Vučedol Culture carriers.
