As a matter of fact, ever since the early Neolithic era, man believed that the image of a plump woman embodied fertility. It is quite possible that the numerous little figures with expressed female attributes were actually representations of the Great Goddess or the Great Mother and those were linked to the fertility cult. However, there were very often in the houses, too, which could additionally mean they were protectresses of homes.
